What are Crystals?

We are currently under construction and will return soon.

The word crystals can be confusing because there are different kinds and they can be natural or manmade. In general, there are four kinds that most people know about; rock crystals, Swarovski, cubic zirconia, and Czech crystals.

Rock crystals are gemstones that have to be mined before they are cut and polished. The most well-known are diamonds, rubies, and sapphires which are considered precious. There are also semi-precious such as amethyst, rose quartz, and aquamarine, just to name a few.  Cubic Zirconia has a brilliance like a diamond and to an untrained eye, it is hard to tell the difference between cubic zirconia and a diamond. Cubic zirconia is lab generated and is more expensive than the Swarovski crystals.

The Swarovski was invented by Daniel Swarovski. He was born in Bohemia which was part of the Czech Republic. He worked for Preciosa, a company that made the Czech crystals. He later moved to Austria and developed the Swarovski which is more expensive than the Czech crystals. Swarovski has slightly more facets cut than the Czech crystal. However, some Czech crystals are even more beautiful, depending on the colors.

At Patricia Swayze Designs, we use semi-precious, Swarovski, pearls, and Czech crystals. All of the different kinds of crystals make beautiful jewelry.
